Leonetto Cappiello
(1875-1942)

Italian born, Leonetto Cappiello, started as a caricaturist. He later moved to Paris and began work in advertising. He revolutionized marketing posters and turned them into a collectible art form. This self-taught merchandise artist linked products with strikingly colored, contemporary, and memorable images. During his 40 year of career, he created 1,000’s of works, including innovative posters for beverages, ballet, literature, plays, travel, and music halls. Cappiello was instrumental in the Art Deco movement and is best known for setting standards which are still fundamental to today’s advertising.
