Maurice Prendergast
(1858-1924)

Maurice Prendergast pioneered in introducing new directions in American painting. He was perhaps the only true American Post-Impressionist painter of his generation. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland but grew up in Boston, Prendergast first visited Paris in 1886, and returned there a few times to study the work of other masters. Prendergast enthusiastically absorbed the doctrine that a painting, before representing anything, should be perceived as a flat surface covered with ordered patches of color. He evolved a brilliant, sparkling watercolor technique in which the surface became a mosaic of rotund, swirling forms, laid close side by side, with deep perspectives.
